LE SACRE DU PRINTEMPS

Le Sacre du Printemps is an icon in music and dance history. Composer Igor Stravinsky and choreographer Vaslav Nijinsky premiered it in 1913 and have since inspired several artists with this sacrificial ritual in honour of the earth. A century later, that fascination turns into a necessity. The need to rethink our relationship to the earth. Who is actually sacrificing whom? And if humanity ultimately sacrifices itself, what might a new beginning look like?
Belgian choreographer Michiel Vandevelde transforms Le Sacre to a duet between performers David Attenberger and Brandy Butler and video art from Juan Ferrari. He expands Stravinsky’s composition with a new electronic epilogue by Fallon Mayanja. The choreography emerges from hand signals and gestures – one of the earliest forms of interpersonal communication. As Stravinsky’s last note fades, pulsating beats announce part two. The beginning of a fascinating and tender attempt to shape a life of coexistence.
